Danish Furniture

The popularity of Danish furniture is known to have started back in the mid-1920s and is regularly referred to as the Scandinavian furniture movement.  Leading the way in modern Danish furniture design were the ground breaking designers Hans J Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Borge Mogensen.  These great Danish furniture designers are renowned for raising the standards of furniture design in terms of aesthetics and functionality and heralded a new era of collaborative work between architects and manufacturers.

Arne Jacobsen

People in the post-war era were looking for something new and fresh and these modern Danish furniture designers answered their call.  Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) is famous for his work at the Royal Hotel of Copenhagen which was completed in 1960 and featured many of the Danish chairs and tables that became modern day furniture icons such as the Egg chair, the Swan Chair and the AJ Table Lamps. His biggest success was the Series 7 chair, designed in 1955.

Hans Wegner

Hans J Wegner started out as a cabinetmaker in 1931 and went on to study at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, finally becoming an architect in 1938.  After leaving he went on to work for Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller before opening his own architectural business in 1943.  He designed over 500 great Danish chairs the most popular of which was the ‘Round’ chair made in 1949 that was featured on the cover of American magazine, Interiors and was described as the ‘world’s most beautiful chair’.

Borge Mogensen

Borge Mogensen was born in Denmark in 1914 and started his working life as a cabinetmaker.   He was chiefly known for developing simple, classical and highly functional furniture.  His early career as a traditional craftsmen was considered invaluable to his design career and the ability to adapt new and innovative designs into comfortable workable furniture pieces became his trademark.   He was awarded the C.F Hansen medal by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1972.

Danish Style

Danish furniture has become so popular because it easily incorporates into most styles of homes.   The simple organic shapes and designs allow a mix a match of styles and pieces.  Traditional wood construction and materials ensure that these pieces not only look fantastic, but are built to last a lifetime.
